Reading the page 114 of A Matter of Death and Life by Irvin and Marilyn Yalom. Suddenly, I have a better understanding of the poem – Farewell by Eduard Mörike.
“How can you speak so lightly about this? I cannot bear the thought of your dying.” – Irvin Yalom said, as his wife, Marilyn Yalom was talking about her funeral.
“Farewell!” – You do not feel
What it means, this word of pain;
With hopeful countenance
You said it, and a light heart.
„Lebewohl!“ – Du fühlest nicht,
Was es heisst, dies Wort der Schmerzen;
Mit getrostem Angesicht
Sagtest du’s und leichtem Herzen.
Lebe wohl (Excerpt)
Eduard Mörike
