Ben sings – reading “Noem geen namen” by Astrid Sy

Hollandsche Schouwburg in Amsterdam, October 1942.

The Jews were locked up in Hollandsche Schouwburg until they were deported to concentration and extermination camps. Their children were sent to the nursery opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg. In the nursery, a secret rescue operation was happening, this book describes the underground rescue network. Sadly, out of 10 children, only 1 could escape the horrible fate.

This was a scene, where the children first came into the nursery, been taken from their home by force, and teared away from their parents, panic and sad. In this situation, Ben sang, and the children sang with him. Afterward, the children could laugh under this storm of life.

80 pages to go until I finished the book. This book is so beautiful, so important. This book is telling me there is always a way to make a different, no matter how hopeless is the situation. Recently, I started following “Parents Circle Families Forum” account, it is an organization made up of Israelis and Palestinians who have lost an immediate family member to the conflict, seeking for reconciliation.

Note:
“Originally, the Hollandsche Schouwburg was a Dutch theatre, but it was deemed a Jewish theatre in 1941 by Nazi occupiers, and it was later used as a deportation center during the Holocaust in the Netherlands.”
