“Was it Frederick’s voice?
Was it magic?”
Frederick
by Leo Lionni
How to prepare for the coming cold winter is one of the main concerns now. This is not an ungrounded worry in European countries when we read the news. Companies, churches, private home are calculating about the room temperature for winter to ensure that Germany does not run out of gas in winter.
The inflation rate in Germany hits record 10% in September. Also we are expecting economic recession due to soaring energy prices and incomplete recovery from the COVID 19. Therefore, it is necessary to plan ahead, avoid wasting food and energy when they are going to be very limited.
Just like Frederick’s friends, the little mice. They knew that the winter would be severe, they need to store food while they could. But Frederick had another priority. His priority was seemingly useless to his friends though.
“Frederick, why don’t you work?” they asked.
“I do work,” said Frederick.
“I gather sun rays for the cold dark winter days.”
Fortunately, Frederick knew the value of his work. Despite the unappreciation and misunderstanding, he worked committedly and diligently.
Winter was cold and grey as expected, the mice had finished up their food but the winter was still long. Suddenly, they remembered the supplies that Frederick had collected and asked him about them.
And as Frederick spoke of the sun
The four little mice began to feel warmer.
Was it Frederick’s voice?
Was it magic?
What about you? What are you gathering for the coming winter?
