I love music and literature, I think, the essence of literature and music culminated in German Art Song. This is the reason that I appreciate these four books about the fantastic song writers Schubert, Schumann, Hensel and the legendary poet Hölderlin. When you read Hölderlin’s poems out loud, they sound like songs, therefore, his poems are inspirations for many important composers until now.
Schumann’s Gesänge der Frühe (Songs of the Morning), Op. 133, is a composition in five movements for solo piano. This composition was inspired by Hölderlin’s poem that paints a beautiful uplifting picture of spring, shouting: “a new life has begun!” Secretly, from far away a lament creeps in. Songs of the Morning was one of Schumann’ s late works. Both Hölderlin and Schumann were suffering mental illness, nevertheless, they have left behind a valuable cultural legacy to us.
Peter Härtling (1933 – 2017) was a German writer and poet. He was a member of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and he received the Großes Verdienstkreuz for his major contribution to German literature. (From goodreads.com)
