I am very sorry if I have disappointed you, when I talk about Heidelberg without showing you the old bridge, the old castle and the old church. I love the Heidelberg old town, like the whole world does. People from all over the world cross the ocean for just a glimpse of Heidelberg and I was allowed to call it my home for 4 years, what a privilege.
During the 4 years, I have received friends and visitors from Beijing, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Bristol, Munich, Jakarta, Singapore, Johor Bahru, Heilbronn, Marbach, Paris, Kuala Lumpur and etc. Sweet memories when I showed the charming Heidelberg to my cousins from USA, my parents, my sister and my childhood choir.
However, this was not my daily life when I was there. But my peaceful old apartment and friends were those with me day in, day out. Let me show you my nostalgic days in Heidelberg.
It’s very sweet to find out my name still written at the doorbell, my flatmate has given me a spare key, the WIFI of my computer connected automatically without asking me the password. We enjoyed the good old time together.
At evening, with my very close friends, we visited our favourite concert like those old days. The concert reminds me about how I love Heidelberg and music, also the love that has enriched my life and has taken me to many new paths. Most importantly, it reminds me, why I was in Heidelberg with A Simple Song by Leonard Bernstein. I was in Heidelberg because of Church Music education, 4 years dedicated solely to music for The LORD, God.
Christian faith, sacred music still mean everything to me, only the conventional church musician career does not fit me. It’s quite tiring laying stones for the path I want to take, not knowing if I’m going in the right direction, occasionally stepping on nails, shocked and painful. It is this situation that makes it all the more important to grasp the faith. Faith, with Abraham’s words:
‘The LORD, before whom I have walked faithfully, will send his angel with you and make your journey a success’ Genesis 24:40
Not worldly success, nor my desire, but to fulfil the purpose of life according to His plan for me.
