To be able to practice organ in St. Kilian’s church is a little piece of heaven to me. I am preparing for a performance where I will play the organ piece “Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr” composed by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. This organ piece is four variations arrangement of Luther’s hymn “Alone to God in the Highest Be Glory”.
After this piece, I practice for my organ lesson, the fantastic fascinating “Fantasia Chromatica” also composed by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. In musical world, chromatic is a group of semitones, like chromatic scale. Often, the organ piece that contain “chromatic” is related to historical mean-tone temperament that create more color and character to each semitone.
Anyway, according to dictionary:
chromatic

When I was practicing this organ piece I was imagining a rainbow, because rainbow is colorful phenomena of light. This piece using counterpoint technique and full of polyphony, one rainbow is definitely not enough. After practicing, I could see a double rainbow in my little piece of heaven. I went home with a smile 🙂
