“Let’s have Fika!” K said with excitement.
Right after I touched down in Stockholm, K met me in airport and announced we should have Fika. So Fika is the first thing I did in Stockholm. And I like it!
Wait a minute, what is Fika? Fika is a Swedish tradition. An English word for Fika could be refreshment or coffee break. But it is more than coffee break, it is kind of ritual. When life is good, let’s have Fika! When life is complicated, let’s have Fika! Everyday is a Fika day, and every time is perfect to have Fika. You can have Fika on every occasion, and in everywhere. For example, at home, at office, at church, at Cafe, at museum…
Yeah, in museum, to be exact, the Vasa Museum. This museum display a mighty ship that sank in Stockholm in year 1628. It was a long walk in Stockholm before we arrived in the museum. K and I felt like a need to have Fika before looking around. We bought the entrance ticket and directly went to the restaurant inside the museum.
Impressive interior design, many windows with blue water view. Those attractive cinnamon buns smiled friendly to us, we both were so sure that our decision to have Fika at the moment was definitely a proper one. We chatted and really enjoyed the moment. We did not seem to care about why we were in the museum in the first place until an announcement in Swedish been made through speaker.
K’s face changed suddenly. I looked at her and started worrying. After the announcement, I haven’t had chance to ask K what happened, she said, “the museum is closing in 15 minutes, we need to hurry up!” Luckily K is very familiar with the museum, with her guidance, I saw the most important display with brief explanation. The Vasa Museum in 15 minutes and we made it! This incident make me wonder if Fika is enchanted.
Last day in Stockholm, K told me she has done with rearranging her office, I could drop by her office to have a look at the new design. Afternoon, after strolling around Stockholm by myself, I thought about to visit K in her office.
I got off the tram, walked in a shopping mall and bought 2 cups of coffee with 2 cinnamon buns. I knocked on the door of K’s office and K opened the door. I acted like a Swede and proudly said: “Let’s have Fika!”
